When Life Gives You Kim Jaejoong (and Lemons)

Length: Oneshot
Rating: PG
Rating: PG
Genre: fluff, romance
Summary: Yunho was completely and utterly drawn into the boy who ran the lemonade stand just across his house. Two weeks after Yunho had moved into his new place, he happened to notice that there was a lemonade stand outside his house, just across the road to the other sidewalk. He watched through the curtains as people bicycling past and neighbors walking out into the gardens waved at the boy running the stand. Fascinated by the perfect picture before his eyes, he immediately grabbed his wallet and headed through the front door.
He reached the stand in only five strides, and the boy who was sitting on the stool looked up at the noise of footsteps. He beamed, his hair shiny and bouncing in his face as he said, “Hello! Get your cup of fresh lemonade, only seven bucks a cup!”
The boy was so exceptionally pretty and adorable with his big doe eyes and plush pink lips that it slipped past Yunho’s mind that seven bucks was the most he had ever paid for a cup of lemonade. He reached into his wallet to fish out the bills and handed it over with a smile on his face. Yunho watched him pour the cold juice from the pitcher into a plastic cup.
“You don’t want the cup back, right?” He asked, just to make sure.
“No. That’s why I use plastic cups, so people can go on about their day without having to finish the lemonade in one big gulp right here and then return the glass to me,” The boy said, smiling up at him. Yunho nodded, finding the other male's enthusiasm rather cute. It made leaving a little hard, like saying goodbye to a puppy, and he waved at lemonade boy reluctantly before crossing the road to go back to his house.
Seven bucks for that delicious lemonade was definitely worth it at the end of the day.
A week later, on Saturday evening when Yunho came back home from the grocery store, he saw the lemonade stand had been put up once again. Immediately he felt his mood brighten and he put his bags inside before walking over, reaching into his pocket to grab his wallet. The boy running the stand was adorable and his lemonade was amazing, so Yunho didn’t want to miss such a perfect combo.
“You are back,” The raven said at the sight of him, grinning. Yunho grinned back at him and handed him the bills. He received his cup of lemonade and took a sip, and then groaned.
“What do you put in here? It’s so good.”
The boy giggled, “Nothing fancy, the normal ingredients for lemonade.”
“No way, there is something else in here. Normal lemonade doesn’t taste this good,” Yunho gushed, gulping the drink down quickly, feeling completely refreshed, “Can I have one more?”
“Wow, you really like it that much?” The other male seemed astonished and flattered at the same time, pouring him another cup. Yunho gave him another seven bucks and tried not to think about the fact that he had spent 21 dollars on lemonade in the course of just two days. The boy watched him as he drank the juice, chin resting on his hands, seeming in awe.
When he finished, he smiled, blinking a few times as if in a daze, “That was great. You have some skill when it comes to lemonade.”
The raven blushed, a big grin on his face, “Thank you.”
Yunho stared at the adorable male for a moment before asking, “How old are you? Why are you doing a lemonade stand? Not that I’m complaining of course—but it’s just my first time seeing such a thing other than from dramas.”
He earned a cute laugh, “I’m nineteen.”
Yunho’s eyes widened, taken completely aback, “Nineteen?! Seriously?”
The boy tilted his head, “Why? Do I look older?”
“No, of course not—you just, wow. I thought you were like sixteen. Or fifteen. You look very young.”
The raven laughed again, covering his mouth with the back of his hand, “Thank you, I guess?”
“Why a lemonade stand though? Haven’t you graduated yet?” Yunho questioned curiously.
“I have,” the other male nodded, “But I volunteer every week in a small, run down animal shelter. I do this so I can donate all the money to the shelter so that the animals there can have better living conditions.”
The price of the lemonade suddenly made sense, and Yunho nodded, feeling his heart warm up. He was adorable and was a good person. Such perfection couldn’t be real. “That’s very kind of you.”
The boy just looked down with a shy little smile, and then asked, “What about you? How old are you?”
“I’m turning twenty five this year,” Yunho answered, “I work in an accounting firm. It’s a boring job though.”
“Well, it just says that you’re a smart person,” the younger male replied, giving him a toothy grin and Yunho chuckled, “Thank you for buying the lemonade.”
“No problem,” Yunho smiled, but then hesitated for a moment before saying, “Honestly, if you lowered the prices, I think you could get a lot more customers. And tell them what the profits go to, they’ll keep coming back.”
A twinkle flashed in the boy’s eyes and he had an amused smile tugging at his lips, “How long do you think I’ve been doing this for?”
Yunho was in awe of the sudden playfulness, a bit speechless but managed to utter, “I don’t know.”
“I’ve been doing this for maybe two years. You might not know but I get a lot of customers. I don’t know why they always come back but they do even though I haven’t told them what I do with the money. I guess they just really like lemonade.”
Or really like you, Yunho almost said, but kept his mouth shut.
“I have raised the prices over the months. I started off with three bucks because I didn’t know if my lemonade was good enough to be anything more than that. I mean, after all, it’s just lemonade,” The raven picked at the tablecloth that his hands were resting on, “but people really liked it. I have frequent customers. They still come back even if one small cup is seven dollars. I should feel bad about charging them so much right?”
“I don’t think they will be so angry if they knew what you do with it,” Yunho smiled, and the other male returned it. He could feel heat soak into his back under the sun the more he stood on the sidewalk, and sighed, “Well I should get going. I have some errands to run and it’s really hot.”
“I understand, it was nice talking to you,” The boy shook his hand, and then paused, “I never caught your name.”
“Jung Yunho,” He replied, “Yours?”
“Kim Jaejoong.”
Yunho kept returning to the stand whenever he saw it open. He knew he was draining his wallet and coming dangerously close to being broke until his next salary but he couldn’t help it. Something about Jaejoong just drew him in. There was a charm to the boy that he knew was what kept bringing back customers.
At one point, Jaejoong tried to give him free drinks, and when he refused, discounts. The raven said that he felt bad about making Yunho spend so much, but Yunho had told him that it was fine because 1) the drink was just too good and 2) it went for a good cause, anyway.
He had conversations with Jaejoong that he would think about until he fell asleep. The younger male was just stunning, had a great personality and made amazing lemonade. It scared him how perfect he found Jaejoong, and scared him even further when he realized that his fondness for the boy’s cute appearance and characteristics had turned into something else.
Jaejoong was nineteen. Sure, he wasn’t as young as Yunho had thought him to be—but still. Nineteen was pretty young. He was still considered a teenager and Yunho was already twenty four. There was no possibility of them, and he kept trying to remind himself that whenever Jaejoong giggled or did something else insanely cute.
And then he tried to make himself believe that Jaejoong probably had a girlfriend or boyfriend or crush or whatever and that he totally wasn’t interested in some old man that spend endless bucks on his lemonade. Beating himself up helped though, and Yunho continued to keep doing it because he didn’t want to ruin the sweet, innocent friendship that had blossomed between them.
But then one day it rained.
In the town Yunho had moved into, it was always hot. Sometimes there would be a cool breeze or a slight drop in the heat, but other than that there was only fans and air conditioning to keep people cool. On one particular day, it had started to drizzle and he was quite surprised, but then ecstatic as the light droplets of rain had started to turn heavy, hitting hard against the roof.
He was about to close his eyes and continue relaxing on the sofa when he realized something. He had bought lemonade on that day—and with a gasp, Yunho sprung up and put his shoes on. Just as he had thought, the minute he opened the door, he saw Jaejoong scrambling to get everything, rushing about, absolutely soaked.
Rushing over and almost slipping on the wet road, he told the other male to get the pitchers, the cups, and the moneybox and run to his house. Jaejoong did as he was told, putting everything into a box and Yunho quickly removed the lemonade banner, feeling every inch of his clothes get soaked. He blinked through the rain and pushed his wet hair aside and carried the plastic table himself through the road.
He panted as he placed it down in his garden, finally in shelter. He looked up to see Jaejoong shivering at his doorframe, still holding onto everything and looking like a wet puppy. Feeling his heart pang at the pitiful sight, Yunho ushered the boy inside, took the things from him and placed them on the kitchen counter. Jaejoong removed his shoes and stood in one place, hugging himself.
“Are you alright?”
“Y-yeah. That was just. Unexpected,” Jaejoong answered, his bangs wet and almost covering his eyes.
“I know. I was surprised too but then I remembered that you had your stand up,” Yunho ran a hand through his soaked hair and questioned, “How far is your home?”
“It’s like really nearby,” Jaejoong answered, looking outside the window, “I can go now—“
“Of course not, you are soaking and it’s still raining outside. I can drive you if you want to leave but you should dry yourself up first,” Yunho advised, and Jaejoong fell silent, biting his lip, “Stay here.”
Yunho rushed upstairs to get some towels and clothes. He found a t-shirt and sweatpants and blushed when he realized that Jaejoong would be wearing no underwear underneath his clothes. Shaking off the thought, he went back downstairs and handed the items to the boy, before guiding him to the bathroom. In the meantime, he dried himself up as well and changed into dry clothes before meeting Jaejoong back at the living room.
As expected, it was one of the cutest sights he had ever seen. His black t-shirt was oversized on the small male and his sweatpants dragged across the marble floor as he walked, making Jaejoong almost trip. He hid his smile behind his hand and joined the the smaller male on the couch, feeling his heart flutter slightly as he had never imagined they would be in such a situation.
But the boy seemed rather sad, Yunho didn’t know if it was because of the incident itself or the surprise that came along with it or that the rain arrived on the day he had his stand up.
The raven spoke himself, however, mumbling softly on the sofa, “You know there were a lot of neighbors in their gardens. They watched me, advised me to do this and that and grab the banner and close the moneybox and everything—but not one of them actually came out to help me. I felt really humiliated, just standing there and rushing about as they watched me,” Yunho looked at him, and squeezed his shoulder, “They always make small talk with me when they buy my lemonade. I will be forever grateful for them for buying such expensive drinks but... I guess I was just surprised that nobody actually cared enough about me despite always talking to me to help me.”
Jaejoong then looked up at him, a towel on his hair and his cheeks turning slightly red as he said, “Except you, of course. Thank you so much.”
“You don’t need to thank me,” Yunho looked away, feeling terrible when his heart began to race slightly, “It’s just a normal thing to do.” He stole a glance, and Jaejoong was smiling almost shyly, looking down at his hands. His breath hitched and he cursed in his head. He was going too far, if they continued sitting on the sofa in such a way, he knew he would say something he would beat himself up for.
Standing up he asked, “Would you like to go home? I can drive you.”
“Okay,” Jaejoong nodded, and stood up as well. He grabbed the box from the kitchen counter and crinkled his nose, “All this lemonade gone to waste.”
Yunho clicked his tongue and opened the front door, put his shoes on and told Jaejoong to go into the driveway where his car was parked as he locked the door. “When you put up the stand again, just come to my house and get the table, okay? Oh and your clothes too.” He looked at the other male as he got into the car.
“Okay,” Jaejoong nodded again, and closed the car door.
The drive was silent, and quite short. Yunho knew that Jaejoong was still pretty upset at the realization that the neighbors in their town were jerks. He put the volume up on the radio and they listened to bubblegum pop on the way to Jaejoong’s house. He was told which route to turn, and soon enough Yunho reached a cute little house with flowerbeds aligning the garden. It looked exactly like the kind of house he would expect Jaejoong to live in, and a smile tugged at his lips.
Just as he was about to turn around to look at the other male, he froze when he felt soft, plush lips press against his cheek.
“Thank you,” Jaejoong whispered when he pulled back, “you were the only one that helped me. I seriously can never repay you. You’re too kind to me.”
“Don’t—don’t be silly,” Yunho stammered, feeling his face heat up from the kiss, and he had no bravery to look at the other male, “It was just a normal thing to do,” he said again, feeling ridiculously shy.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Jaejoong smile. The boy then asked for Yunho’s phone and dialed someone’s number and said, “Thankfully I didn’t bring my phone with me to the stand. I had forgotten it today. I guess that was just good luck jumping out in the middle of bad luck.”
Yunho chuckled and then listened to Jaejoong talk to someone over the phone. He ended the call and smiled, “My mother’s going to come out now. Um. Thank you again, Yunho.”
“No problem.”
Through the blurry windows Yunho saw the front door of the house opening, and a small dainty woman rushed through the garden holding up a bright pink umbrella. Jaejoong unlocked his side of the car door and opened it as his mother reached him, “I’ll see you again next week,” he squeezed Yunho’s arm and Yunho nodded, smiling.
Jaejoong took the box from underneath the dashboard and got out of the car. He shut the door but Yunho managed to see the more than adorable sight of Jaejoong and his mother huddling together underneath the umbrella as they hurried towards the house. When the door shut behind them, Yunho sighed, resting his head against the back of the seat. His feelings for Jaejoong were getting stronger by each passing day, which was the last thing he wanted.
The next day, Yunho had a visitor. It was Yoochun, his best friend of eight years, Yoochun who had seen him naked, and Yoochun, who knew what was on his mind just by his facial expressions.
“You’re in love, aren’t you?”
“No.”
“Oh my god. Who is it?” Yoochun gasped, grabbing his shoulders. Yunho grunted, shrugging the grip off and placing his the younger man’s bag of food on the counter. They were going to have a movie night in celebration of Yoochun getting a promotion in his job. “Come on!”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Why not?!” Yoochun gasped, looking offended, “Excuse me Yunho but who am I to you!”
Yunho groaned, falling back onto the sofa. His best friend joined him and stared at him until he finally said, “It’s a guy. Who I’ve met. Recently.”
Yoochun made a noise akin to a squeal and a gasp at the same time, “Have you guys talked? Did you tell him you like him?”
“Of course not!” Yunho glared at him, and then crossed his arms, turning his gaze to the sofa, “I can’t tell him. He doesn’t feel the same way.”
His best friend rolled his eyes in a dramatic manner, “That’s what you say about every single person you like without even telling them how you feel. Don’t be ridiculous. You never know—”
“He’s nineteen.”
Yoochun then seemed to be choking on thin air. Yunho groaned in embarrassment and grabbed a sofa cushion, hiding his face and not wanting to see the other male’s reaction.
“No, dude, wait,” Yunho felt the cushion getting tugged away from his red face, “I’m just surprised. It’s your first time liking someone in that age category. Remember when you had a crush on a forty year old?”
“For the last time, I did not know he was forty when I liked him! He just looked my age, okay?”
“Yeah but still.”
“That was like. Literally five years ago.”
Yoochun waved a hand in dismissal and turned back to their original conversation, “How did you meet him? You see a lot of teenagers, why was it him you fell for?’
“I did not fall for him,” Yunho blushed, hitting his friend, “He—he runs a lemonade stand, just over the roa—“
“Oh my god, a lemonade stand?!” Yoochun squealed this time, a full, drawn out squeal, and Yunho blushed even harder, falling sideways on the sofa and burying his face into another cushion. “Yunho you have to propose to him! How cute is that! A lemonade stand!”
“Propose?! You are crazy. Get out of my house. I haven’t even told him I like him!” his voice came out muffled, and Yoochun shook him with the utmost passion,
“Please. Do it. You have to tell him!”
“And get rejected?!” Yunho shot up, and Yoochun fell backwards onto the sofa, “He doesn’t like me!”
“How do you know!” Yoochun yelled back at him, scrambling up again. The two friends stared at each other, the younger waiting for a silent Yunho to reply, and then smirked, “See. You have no signs of him not liking you. Why are you so against this?”
Yunho sighed, bringing his legs up on the sofa and resting his chin on his knees. His best friend cuddled into him and he groaned, playfully shoving the younger man away before saying,
“Because he’s nineteen. I guess I’m just worried because I’ve never liked anyone as young as him?”
“It’s not even such a big age gap. If he’s mature then it will be fine,” Yoochun assured him, and then paused, “Is he mature?”
“Yeah,” Yunho nodded, “He just kind of has a really mature vibe to him. And he talks about his passions and future goals and stuff and it’s really all good, realistic things. I was impressed. You know why he even does the lemonade stand? So he can donate the profits to an animal shelter he volunteers at.”
Yoochun melted into him and started making soft, crying noises. Yunho rolled his eyes and peeled his best friend off of his body.
“He is so cute, I can’t believe he’s real,” Yoochun fake wept, “I usually hate teenagers but I love him. Yunho you need to tell him.”
Feeling his mood brighten a little, he grabbed his phone and showed his best friend a picture of Jaejoong he had taken during one of their conversations at the lemonade stand. Yoochun gasped at the photo—the beautiful black haired boy putting up two peace signs, having a cute grin on his face.
“Wow.”
“I know.”
“Wow.”
“I know.”
Yoochun blinked several times, and Yunho chuckled, his best friend approving of Jaejoong making him feel considerably better.
The next time he saw Jaejoong, four days later after the little rain incident. He helped the boy put up the stand again, fix up the banner and place all of his things neatly on the table. After buying his usual cup, he turned to go back to his house but Jaejoong grabbed his wrist.
“Where are you going?”
“Oh,” Yunho blinked, “I just thought—um.”
Jaejoong blushed slightly, pulling his hand away, “I’m sorry. I’m kind of bored sometimes. You can go if you’re busy, I did bring my phone today.”
Yunho on an ordinary day would have said no, no I’ll stay—but on that day, Yunho remembered Yoochun’s persistence and how do you know he doesn’t like you, you stupid bear, and decided to do something a little different.
“Yeah. I am kind of busy. Sorry.”
He watched Jaejoong’s reaction—a little widening of the eyes, a parting of the lips and then the way he nodded, looking dull all at once. He waved at the younger male and then walked over to his house, feeling guilt tug at his heart but knowing he had to go through with his little test. Once he had closed the door, he peeked through the curtains and tried to bury the shame he felt.
Jaejoong now had his chin on the table, a pout on his lips, looking like a sulky little puppy as his fingers tapped the table mindlessly. Yunho had to admit, the reaction was more than he expected. He tried to convince himself that it was obviously because the boy was bored, he had nobody to talk to and it was hot outside. But then he watched Jaejoong lift his head, and realized the raven was staring at his front door, as if it would open any second. He swallowed thickly.
Leaving the window, Yunho sat on his sofa and closed his eyes. He knew that he was coming close to telling Jaejoong his feelings, and he realized that maybe it was for the better. He could just get rejected and have it over with, or continue to spend his minutes thinking about Jaejoong and imagining scenarios in which they were together.
Before Jaejoong left, Yunho opened the front door and called him over, “Let me give you your clothes from earlier.”
The boy nodded, and walked into the house. When Yunho returned with the clothes, Jaejoong took them, paused, and then said, “I have feelings for you.”
Yunho’s lips parted, and he couldn’t move from his spot.
The raven took a deep breath and said, “I had these feelings since that first day you met me. I—I know you might not feel the same way, because you’re older and more mature and you probably don’t want to date a teenager, but I just. I have to tell you, because it's becoming harder and harder for me to keep this in.
“And I haven’t even lived on this earth for that long, but I’ve met a lot of terrible people already and seen a lot of terrible things happen. I know all the people who buy my lemonade are good, because they are willing to spend so much on just a cup—but you. I just. You’re like.. really. Really. Good. You have a good heart and you always buy my lemonade like all the time and you helped me in the rain and you always ask me how my day is going and if I need anything. You even bought me a battery fan and gave me wet wipes when I was sweating. You even noticed that my bangs were sticking to my forehead and you gave me a clip to keep them away from my face,” the boy was blushing, fiddling with his fingers, but never looking away from the frozen man in front of him.
Yunho swallowed thickly, unable to believe his ears, and Jaejoong continued,
“I—I really like you. I just love everything about you… I’m so glad you moved into this town. It was like… the best thing that could’ve happened to me. Meeting you,” the younger male then walked forward and held his hands, looked up into his eyes and said, “I just have to tell you this. I don’t know about you but this is what I feel.”
Yunho, in one swift movement, cupped his cheeks and kissed him. Jaejoong gasped against his lips and grabbed his shirt, clinging to him. The older male pulled away slightly and whispered, “You have no idea how much I like you too, Jaejoong. I just didn’t want to tell you because I felt like it would ruin our friendship and I thought that’s all you wanted, for us to be friends.”
Jaejoong blushed, shaking his head, his eyes bright and filled with happiness, “I want you to be so much more for me. I promise our age gap won’t do anything, it’s nothing big.”
“I know, I was hesitant at first but you are smart and mature and everything perfect in this world so I know it will work out now,” Yunho smiled, unable to believe that at that moment, it was actually reality. His actions had unknowingly made the other male like him, and he was astonished just thinking about it. Jaejoong grinned up at him, wrapping his arms around his neck as they kissed once more. The raven was small and fit perfectly against his body, and it was so much better than all those scenarios that had played inside his head.
He paused, his smile widening slightly as he asked breathlessly, “Will you be my boyfriend?”
“Yes,” Jaejoong answered, an adorable, giggling mess before their lips joined for the third time, soft and gentle. When they pulled away, Yunho took in the sight of the beautiful male that was now his. Jaejoong was so innocent, so precious, so kindhearted, and he knew it was now his duty to protect such pure, utter perfection from the rest of the world. And he would fulfill his duty no matter what it took.
He then realized at that moment, with Kim Jaejoong in his arms, that moving into a new town was definitely one of the best decisions he had ever made.
When life gives you lemons, drink lemonade and fall in love with the boy running the stand.

Oh my gosh! This is so cute and adorable too! It has your brand of fluff written all over it. It's more than decent. This is good! The fic is really cute. And the way you took the "When life gives you lemonades. . ." adage and turned into a plot for this fic, was neat.

Jaejoong is like a sunshine. He's enthusiatic and full of light, and kind-hearted volunteering to be in the lemonade stand for animals. No wonder why Yunho is attracted to him from the first time he saw Jaejoong.
'I’ve been doing this for maybe two years. You might not know but I get a lot of customers. I don’t know why they always come back but they do even though I haven’t told them what I do with the money. I guess they just really like lemonade.”
Or really like you, Yunho almost said, but kept his mouth shut.
I almost squealed at this part.
I think all of your fiction contain what I am searching for — fluffs ❤️
And you are good at it. Don't be thinking that you lack of something. I really like your fics.
Cheer up!

At first I hated you don't have chaptered fics, only one-shots and drabbles (I like long fics better), but I didn't have time to read something long, so I started reading it because that's what my time let me read. And well, now I know why you don't have longer fics. I almost fainted reading this one, due to the overdose of fluffiness, and I'm still puking raimbows and unicorns, and I love your writing style, the development of characters and the flow of the fic, and I really wished you'd have something bigger, because thes one-shots and drabbles aren't enough. Look at this overly cute fic here, I'm still dying and madly in love with it! <3 <3 <3 <3
Can't wait to finish work to be able to read everything in this page! ^^
